What Happens in a Family Round: A Step-by-Step Guide

A family round is a structured process that creates space for reflection, connection, and growth. Here's exactly what happens, step by step.

Step 1: Parent Sets Up the Round

A parent (or trusted adult) creates a new round in LittleBig.Family. They choose:

  • A title or theme for the round (e.g., "New Year Reflection" or "Birthday Celebration")
  • Which family members to include
  • When the round should close

The parent also configures the "circle" for each participant—deciding who will give feedback about whom. This might include immediate family, extended family, close family friends, or other trusted adults.

Step 2: Everyone Gives Reflections

Each participant receives an invitation to participate. They join a voice conversation guided by AI, where they share their reflections about the people in their circle.

The AI conversation is designed to be:

  • Age-appropriate—adapting to each person's developmental stage
  • Thoughtful—asking questions that invite meaningful reflection
  • Safe—creating space for honest sharing without pressure

Participants can share what they've noticed, what they appreciate, and observations about growth or change. The conversation feels natural and supportive, not like an interrogation.

Step 3: AI Follow-Ups

During the conversation, the AI may ask follow-up questions to help participants go deeper. These questions might explore:

  • Specific examples of what they've noticed
  • How someone has grown or changed
  • What they appreciate or value about someone
  • Ways someone contributes to the family

These follow-ups help create richer, more meaningful feedback that goes beyond surface-level observations.

Step 4: Summaries Generated

Once the round closes and all participants have shared their reflections, our AI transforms the raw feedback into strengths-first profiles. This transformation:

  • Protects identity—separating behavior from character
  • Uses strengths-first language—leading with what's working
  • Ensures emotional safety—avoiding shame or judgment
  • Maintains age-appropriateness—matching developmental stage

Each person receives a private profile that celebrates their strengths while also including observations about growth and contribution. Raw comments are never shown—only the transformed, emotionally safe versions.

Step 5: Reading With Child

For children, profiles are designed to be read together with a parent. This creates a meaningful moment of connection where:

  • Parent and child can process feedback together
  • Questions can be answered in real-time
  • Strengths can be celebrated together
  • Growth areas can be discussed with support

This shared reading experience ensures that feedback is received in a safe, supported context. Kids don't have to process difficult feedback alone—they have a trusted adult there to help them understand and integrate what they're learning.

Step 6: Optional Repair

Sometimes, feedback surfaces areas where repair is needed. Maybe someone realizes they've been showing up in a way that doesn't match their values, or there's been a misunderstanding that needs addressing.

The 360 process creates space for this repair. When feedback is delivered with care and received with openness, it can be a pathway to reconnection. Families can use the insights from profiles to have conversations about how to show up better for each other.

This repair process is optional—not every round will need it. But when it does, the structure and safety of the 360 process makes repair feel possible rather than overwhelming.

Age-Appropriate Flow

The process adapts to each person's age and developmental stage:

  • Young children: Shorter conversations, simpler questions, more visual/playful elements, always with parent support
  • Tweens: More detailed conversations, questions about identity and belonging, growing independence in participation
  • Teens: Deeper reflection, questions about contribution and purpose, more autonomy in the process
  • Adults: Full participation, complex reflection, focus on growth and relationship-building

This age-appropriate approach ensures that everyone can participate meaningfully, regardless of their developmental stage.
